Tax Forms

To complete the Teaching Assistant Contract formalities, you will need P45 or P46 along with the National Insurance Number and bank details.

P45

You get a P45 from your employer when you stop working for them. It's a record of your pay and the tax that's been deducted from it so far in the tax year. It shows:

  • your tax code and PAYE (Pay As You Earn) reference number
  • your National Insurance number
  • your leaving date
  • your earnings in the tax year
  • how much Income Tax was deducted from your earnings

Your employer should automatically give you a P45 when you stop working for them. If not, ask for it - you're entitled to it by law.

P46

If you do not have P45, you will need to complete the P46 form, so you do not end up paying additional tax.

You won’t have a P45 if you’re starting your first job or you’re taking on a second job. Your employer will need to work out how much tax you should be paying on your salary and might ask you to complete P46 form.

P60

Your P60 is the summary of your pay and the tax that's been deducted from it in the tax year. Your employer should provide you with a P60 to keep as a record at the end of every tax year (which runs from 6 April to 5 April the next year).

You’ll need your P60 to prove how much tax you’ve paid on your salary, eg:

  • to claim back overpaid tax
  • to apply for tax credits
  • as proof of your income if you apply for a loan or a mortgage

You may also need it as proof of your income if you apply for a loan or a mortgage - so it's important to keep all your P60s safe.
