Pre-Recruitment Requirements

Eligibility

Generally, year 2 students apply to be a Teaching Assistant.

However, if you wish to apply in your first year of study, you can only be allowed to be a Teaching Assistant in the Second Semester. This means that you are not expected to start demonstrating as soon as you are enrolled for your current course.

You are expected to complete a TA training course and Lab Induction before you can start demonstrating in teaching laboratories. Lab Induction is COMPULSORY

 

Teaching Assistant Training

You are expected to complete the TA training course arranged and taught by the Staff and Development Unit at the University.

National Insurance Number

You cannot be paid, if you do not have a National Insurance Number (NI).

You will need to apply for NI as soon as you know that you have been selected.

Once you obtain the NI, please notify HR Services as soon as possible.

Recruitment and Payment Process

Please ensure that you follow below process (to receive TA contract and payment).

All the forms indicated below are compulsory.


Step 1
Complete the Online Application Form (OAF)

  • Your details from this form will be sent to laboratory conveners who will make a selection on the basis of your skills and experience. You will be notified of your selection.
  • Completing this form does not garuntee that you will be selected.

Step 2
If you are selected, you need complete the Contract Requirement Form (CRF)

  • Your details from both the forms above will be sent to the HR office where your Teaching Assistant contract will be arranged.

Step 3
You will need to attend the TA surgery (details to be announced….) to gain the contract and complete all paperwork as required by the HR Services.

  • If you can not attend the surgery, you will need to visit the HR Office and it will be your responsibility to complete all formalities thereafter.
  • You need to take- Your passport, VISA (in case of International students), Bank details, P45 or P46 when you visit the TA surgery or the HR Office.

Step 4
You will need to complete the PR14 Form (monthly timesheets) and submit before the 4th of each month to get paid.

  • DTC/ CDT TAs should submit their timesheets with DTC/ CDT office in chemistry building.

Step 5
If you do not get paid at the end of the month (and all formalities are complete), please notify the TA Co-ordinator as soon as possible.

  • Please do not wait until end of semester to claim payment all at once.

TA Surgery

It is important that you attend the TA Surgery.

You will be able to collect your contract and submit it at the same surgery, if you take all required documents with you.

If you would not be able to complete the documentation at the surgery, you will need to pay visit to the HR office and complete all formalities yourself.

In order to save you time and avoid any unnecessary delays, it is highly recommneded that you complete all paperwork at the surgery.
